Overview

Video questions help you see beyond a resume by capturing candidate personality and communication skills early in the process. Candidates record their responses in their own time.

💡 Save hours of screening time: Replace manual phone screens with auto-scored video clips that you can review in minutes.

Fairer evaluations: Our AI evaluates responses based on the transcript, providing a score and a clear rationale for that score. AI scoring removes the bias often associated with tone, accent, or appearance.

💼 Scalable volume: Ideal for high-volume roles where you need to see a candidate's communication skills early in the funnel.

Who can use video questions?

  • Core plan users are able to add select video questions from the TestGorilla library. Cost = 1 credit per candidate

  • Plus plan users are able to add and edit video questions from the TestGorilla library and create their own video questions. Cost = 1 credit per candidate

  • Legacy plan users who previously had access to video questions & migrate to Core will retain access to video questions they have created in the past and can continuing using them. However, creating new video questions will require a Plus subscription. Cost = 1 credit per candidate

Setting up video questions

Step 1: Add the tool to your assessment

When building your assessment, navigate to Step 2: Choose evaluation tools.

  1. Find the Video questions card.

  2. Click to add it to your assessment.

Note: Video questions are available on all plans and cost 1 credit per candidate. Access to the TestGorilla video question library is available on Core plans and above.

Step 2: Configure your questions

In Step 3: Configure, you can set up the specific questions you want candidates to answer. You have three options:

  • AI suggestions: Choose from video questions recommended specifically for your job role.

  • Browse library: Access TestGorilla’s full library of pre-built video questions.

  • Create your own: Write your own custom questions.

Step 3: Choose your scoring method

For each question, you can decide how it should be evaluated:

  1. AI auto-scored (Default): AI analyzes the transcript against a rubric to provide an instant score.

  2. Not AI-scored: You will manually review the recording and provide your own rating.

Reviewing results

Once a candidate completes their assessment, their video interviews are easy to find.

  1. Go to the candidate's Results page.

  2. Select the Video questions tab.

  3. Click on a specific question to Review answer.

Inside the review screen, you will find:

  • Candidate video recording: Watch the full response.

  • Full transcript: Read exactly what the candidate said.

  • AI scoring rationale: If auto-scored, you'll see a breakdown of why the AI gave that specific score. Factors such as tone, accent, or appearance are not evaluated. For more details on how TestGorilla uses AI responsibly, see our AI FAQ.

  • Manual override: You can always adjust the score manually if you disagree with the AI's assessment.

FAQ

Is this included in my plan?

Video questions are available on all plans, including the Free forever plan, and cost 1 credit per candidate. On Free, you can write your own questions (up to 5 per interview). The TestGorilla video question library, with science-backed scoring rubrics, is available on Core and Plus.

Is there a time limit for responses?

Yes. You can set response limits of 30 seconds, 60 seconds, or 2 minutes when configuring your questions.

What is the difference between video questions and AI interviews?

Video questions are best for high-volume roles where candidates record asynchronous responses to a preset list of questions. AI interviews are best for high-stakes or complex roles; they feature a dynamic, real-time conversation with an AI interviewer that can probe deeper into responses and ask specific follow-up questions.
