ID Verification

Confirming candidate identity for secure and trustworthy test results

Identity Verification (IDV) is an evaluation tool that confirms a candidate's identity before they begin an assessment. Candidates must upload a government-issued ID and take a live selfie. This verification is handled securely by our partner Veriff and typically completes in under 30 seconds.

This article explains how to enable ID Verification during assessment setup, how to review verification results, and how to filter or troubleshoot candidate ID statuses.

1. Requirements

Before enabling ID Verification, ensure the following:

  • You are on the Plus plan. ID Verification is available on the Plus plan only. It is not available on the Free forever or Core plans, or on legacy accounts.

  • You have sufficient credits. ID verification uses 1 credit per candidate.

  • You have an active job and are creating or editing an assessment.

2. How to enable Identity Verification during assessment setup

Identity Verification is selected during the Configuration step of assessment creation.

Step-by-step

  1. Navigate to Jobs and open the job where you want to add ID Verification.

  2. Start creating an assessment and select IDV in step 2 of the creation process.

  3. Go to the Configuration step.

  4. In the Tools panel on the left, locate the tile labeled ID verification.

    • This tile appears alongside Skills tests, Custom questions, and Conversational AI video interview tools.

    • If IDV is not selected in Step 2, it doesn't appear on the configuration step.

  5. Click the ID verification tile.
You will be taken to the ID Verification configuration screen.

  6. On this screen, you will see a large TestGorilla video panel explaining the IDV process.

    • No additional configuration is required. IDV is either on or off.

  7. Once ID Verification is selected, the tile in the left panel will show a green checkmark, confirming it is enabled.

  8. Select Continue to complete setup.

3. Finalize the assessment

After enabling ID Verification:

  1. Click Continue in the upper-right corner of the screen.

  2. Review the assessment summary.

  3. Confirm and publish the assessment.

Once published:

  • Every candidate invited to the assessment will be required to complete ID Verification before starting the first test.

  • Candidates who do not complete or fail IDV cannot proceed with the rest of the assessment.

4. How to view ID Verification results in the Job Overview

After candidates begin completing your assessment, you can view their verification status in the Candidates tab.

Where verification status appears

On the Candidates table, you will see:

  • The ID column shows a badge representing a candidate’s verification status.

  • Status badges appear in different colors depending on the outcome:

Status

Badge

Meaning

Verified

Blue badge icon

Candidate successfully verified their identity.

Not verified yet

Gray badge icon

Candidate has not completed the ID verification step.

Failed ID verification

Orange badge icon

Candidate’s ID or selfie did not match, or verification failed for another reason. These candidates are disqualified and will not have test results.

You may also see a tooltip after hovering over a failed badge.
Example:

“ID verification failed because:

  • the person did not match the photo on the ID

  • a physical ID document was not used.”

6. How ID verification appears on the candidate’s results page

When you open an individual candidate’s profile, the verification status is shown at the top of their profile card.

There are three possible displays:

A. ID verified (successful)

Displayed as:

  • A blue “ID verified” badge next to the candidate’s name.

  • All skills test results are visible normally.

  • You may proceed with evaluating the candidate.

B. Not verified yet (pending)

Displayed as:

  • A gray “ID not verified yet” badge.

  • Test results will only appear once the candidate completes ID verification and begins the assessment.

  • You may send a reminder using the candidate invitation options.

C. Failed ID verification

Displayed as:

  • An orange failure badge.

  • A message:

“This candidate has failed to verify their identity.
Therefore, there are no test results to show.”

  • The candidate is marked Disqualified.

  • They cannot retake the assessment unless you send a new invitation (using a new credit).

7. Understanding how ID Verification affects the hiring process

  • Candidates cannot start the assessment until ID verification is complete.

  • Failed verification results in automatic disqualification from the assessment.

  • Verified candidates proceed normally, and test results appear as usual.

  • You can rely on IDV as an early fraud-prevention filter before test-taking begins.

8. Troubleshooting

A candidate says they completed IDV but the status is still “Not verified yet.”

Possible causes:

  • Candidate closed the window before confirmation.

  • Poor connection caused the result to not sync.

  • Candidate restarted the flow but did not finish.

What you can do:

  • Ask the candidate to open their invitation email again and proceed to ID verification.

  • Ensure the candidate uses a supported browser and device.

  • Verification sessions can be resumed for up to 7 days.

A candidate’s verification failed. Can they try again?

  • No. Once a candidate fails IDV, the assessment is locked.

  • You must send a new invitation (using a new credit) if you want them to attempt again.

Which documents are accepted?

Candidates may use a physical:

  • Passport

  • National ID card

  • Driver’s license

Why does a candidate have no test results?

This happens when:

  • They did not pass IDV

  • They never completed the verification step

  • They abandoned the assessment before completing IDV

Why do some candidates show no badge at all?

A gray badge (or no badge displayed yet) indicates the candidate has not completed IDV.
